We hear all the time the importance of the breath. And I do agree that our breathing is very important.
After all we play the instrument with our breathing. But if there isn’t something meeting the breath it is all wasted effort.
The key is a subtle reaction in the voice that makes what we do with our breathing productive.
I call this the Instinctive Vocal Response.
In this video I discuss this vocal response and give examples of how it happens.
I also show how it can go wrong and how we can get in the way.

Hi Joe, I would basically agree with that. I would say appoggio is a result of what I’m talking about. So it is definitely part of the situation. But the vocal response is a smaller piece of the puzzle. More basic. It is kind of like the thing that makes the voice exist. Appoggio is a condition of balance that exists after the voice appears successfully and is resting on the breath. So the vocal response is what makes all of the things you described possible.
My impression of what you are saying in this video and referring to as instinctive vocal response, is that what you are describing, is the elusive Italian term appoggio. Placing the voice on top of the breath, not letting breath rise above the vocal cords and feeling that in the sternum area (leaning of the breath and sensation that the vowel/tone is coming from deep down). Would you agree or disagree with that characterization?
